But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
Recently my wife (Steffanie) and I hiked a 14’r here in Colorado. It was an experience. We went because my mother in-law wanted to hike up a 14’r for her 60th birthday to prove she could still do it. Let me tell you I felt like I was holding her back. She was really moving up that mountain. Living here in Denver I’ve had the benefit of being at a higher elevation, compared to where my in-laws live at just around sea level I felt like I had the advantage. Even that did not help. It felt like I could never really catch my breath. I was constantly out of breath and my body didn’t understand. I had prepared all the snacks, water and equipment I could ever need and there was one thing I could not get enough air. This experience made me think about how life sometimes gets this way. We prepare for every possible situation and yet there are moments where no matter how much planning we do, we are not enough. The wonderful thing about our Creator is that He knows our limits and our struggles and He declares that He is enough. Do you need God to be enough for you today? Let’s see what the Bible has to say about God being everything we need.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
Let me just start by saying that we did summit Quandary. There were times I felt like giving up but we made it. Now to the point. When we say that God is enough, that does not eliminate our need. Let me put it this way. In order for God to be enough we must have need. Because God supplies our needs we must have needs. What’s so cool about this is that the Bible doesn’t discount our feelings of needing God. God recognizes that we are needy people. So God prepares for that. The Bible says in Philippians 4:19 that God is rich, and that in His riches he wants to give us everything we need through Jesus. So if you are following along the Bible has just made a bold claim, all we need is Jesus! Woah!
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
If all we need is Jesus, how can we know that He is enough? Let’s look at Joshua’s story for a second. He was the newly minted leader of the children of Israel. This obnoxious band of complainers who at one point tried to rebel against Moses. Joshua has to follow up the greatest leader that they had ever had, a scary job. In Joshua 1:9 God tells him to be courageous, to not be dismayed. What does God say He will do? He will go with Joshua wherever he goes. Into battle, into making a judgment for the people, making a decision about where to go and how to take care of millions of people, God was with Joshua. To Joshua God provided EVERYTHING he needed.
The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. Psalm 138:8
Not convinced that God will provide? Well take a look at Psalm 138:8 with me. The Psalmist tells us that GOd will fulfill his purpose for me. First of all that’s pretty cool, God has a purpose and He will fulfill it. But this awesome text doesn’t end there; it goes on to say that God’s love is steadfast and that it will endure forever. Hold on, did you catch that? “Endure forever”, yeah like never run out, last forever. There is a popular song that came out in the 60’s that has the line “all you need is love”. Even the Beatles knew the truth and power of love. The love that John Lennon wrote about can’t compare to the love God has for you. With such awesome power you would think there is a limit but here we see God’s love lasts forever!
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” John 4:14
Maybe the words of Jesus Himself will convince you. When speaking to a woman at a well a long long time ago, Jesus made a bold claim. He told her that if she were to drink the water that He is offering her she would never be thirsty again. She didn’t fully understand what He meant so He explained that this water would give her eternal life. Jesus is the living water, when we accept Him into our lives He is able to provide for our every need. Wouldn’t our creator know how to provide for us? Maybe today you are wondering how you will make it through the next week. Maybe you’ve been on the ropes feeling like you’ve done everything you can. You have prepared and are at your wits end. Look to Jesus, He wants to provide for you. Look to Jesus and see what He has for you today.
