Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Psalm 136:1

If you ask my soon-to-be wife about my breakfasts, she would roll her eyes. Not out of disappointment or disgust, but more out of the lack of creativity. She would describe my breakfast as dull, boring, or kind of just bland. I would describe my breakfast as efficient, easy, and consistent. For years, I ate the same breakfast. I had an egg and avocado bagel sandwich. Once I realized gluten and I are enemies, I switched out the bagel for gluten-free tots. What some, probably most people, would describe as dull, I find to be extremely desirable. I know what I am getting! Some people see God this way. They read texts that tell them God never changes or fades away, and they see that as a problem. Now I do not believe you are wrong when you call my never-changing breakfast dull. I do believe it’s wrong to call God dull simply because He doesn’t change. Maybe we just need to shift our perspective a little. I promise if you keep reading, you won’t find a dull, boring, or bland bowl of tater-tots waiting for you.

“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. Malachi 3:6

The biblical descriptions of God are pretty vast and expansive. They tell us of a creator who is majestic, all-powerful, and amazing! Some descriptions aren’t so easy to understand. Malachi 3:6 is one of those. It’s pretty clear. God does not change. God said so himself through his prophet Malachi. Does this mean that we can’t reason with Him? I don’t think so. Instead, I believe that this verse is talking about a God who is consistent. Like my lovely breakfasts, God is reliable in who He is. That’s why God emphasizes His unchangingness. Not to seem rigid but to express His dependability.

Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

Isaiah picks up on this dependability idea when talking about the word of God. Flowers and grasses are awesome! They are dependable but only for a season. But as Isaiah contrasted them with the word of God, we see that God doesn’t have a season of usefulness. He doesn’t go out of season like those bellbottom jeans, or those skinny jeans (sorry). God is always in season. Instead, God is enduring and steadfast; He does not wither or fall.

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? Numbers 23:19

The Israelites had no experience with a dependable God when they were in Egypt. They were witness to all the Egyptian rituals and sacrifices in order to persuade their gods to do things for them. Their understanding of how a god worked was vastly different from how the God of the universe operates. The beautiful thing about a consistent God is that He is dependable. When He says He loves you, He means it! When He says He will take care of you, He will! You do not need to persuade Him with good deeds or sacrifices; you simply need to be in a relationship with Him.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

This unchanging, consistent God came down as Jesus, and He holds this same characteristic of consistency. I know that I find comfort in consistency, while others find predicability to be boring or dull. But I would venture to guess that chaos is not what people are looking for when they like things to be changed up. There is a limit to the amount of change that people can handle. Thankfully, our God is not one who is ever-changing and hard to understand. Instead, He is a God whose character of love never changes. I find that to be a comfort above all else. When we read the psalms of a God who is loving, we can know He will not wither or fade away and His love will endure forever.
